Authentication

Our Authentication Expertise

ONE OF ONE authentication bench — microscope inspection, a Richard Mille caseback, a stereo microscope with a live display, and Witschi timing equipment

At ONE OF ONE, authentication goes beyond checking serial numbers or hallmarks. We combine professional authentication equipment, proprietary reference data, and extensive experience in the luxury watch and jewelry market to evaluate each piece based on its materials, craftsmanship, production period, and overall consistency.

Our specialty is authenticating high-end timepieces such as Richard Mille, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet. These exceptional watches require real-world experience gained through buying, selling, and evaluating rare luxury watches—expertise that goes far beyond reference materials alone.

High-End Watches

Patek Philippe & Richard Mille Authentication and Acquisition Specialists

ONE OF ONE specializes in the authentication, acquisition, and sale of high-end watches from brands such as Patek Philippe and Richard Mille.

Because individual watches from these brands can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, counterfeit documentation is often circulated alongside genuine watches. In many cases, the watch itself may be authentic while the accompanying certificate, box, bracelet, or other accessories have been replaced or falsified.

This is why authenticating a high-end watch requires far more than checking the watch alone.

Why Certificates Matter So Much

A clear example is the Richard Mille RM 055 Bubba Watson.

Depending on its production year and market condition, the value of a complete example with its original certificate can vary significantly. A watch from a later or discontinued production year may command a substantial premium, while the same watch without its original papers may trade for considerably less.

This price gap creates an incentive for dishonest sellers to purchase an authentic watch without papers and pair it with a counterfeit certificate before reselling it as a complete set.

Unlike brands that use modern electronic warranty-card systems, many Patek Philippe and Richard Mille watches were originally delivered with paper certificates. These documents can be difficult to authenticate because their paper, printing, handwriting, format, and period-specific details must all be consistent with the watch.

A single mistake can result in a significant financial loss.

Why So Few Dealers Specialize in These Watches

There are far fewer professional dealers handling Richard Mille and Patek Philippe than there are dealers specializing in more widely produced luxury watches.

To trade watches at this level, a team must have:

  • Sufficient capital to acquire watches worth hundreds of thousands of dollars
  • The expertise to authenticate the watch, documents, and accessories
  • Accurate knowledge of global market values
  • Experience identifying replacement or damaged components
  • A trusted network of qualified collectors and buyers

These watches cannot be handled safely through reference materials alone. Real expertise is developed by repeatedly buying, selling, inspecting, and taking financial responsibility for actual pieces.

ONE OF ONE’s Experience

ONE OF ONE is one of the most experienced dealers in Korea in handling Richard Mille and Patek Philippe watches.

In 2025, approximately 40% of ONE OF ONE’s total sales came from high-end watches, including Richard Mille and Patek Philippe, while the remaining 60% came primarily from Rolex.

This is particularly meaningful when considering how limited the annual production of these brands is compared with Rolex. While Rolex produces more than one million watches annually, Patek Philippe produces only a fraction of that volume, and Richard Mille produces significantly fewer still.

The scarcity of these watches means that gaining meaningful hands-on experience is exceptionally difficult. Our transaction history has allowed us to build extensive practical knowledge of rare references, production-period differences, original components, documentation, and market value.

Case Studies

Examples from Our Authentication Experience

Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712/1A Dial

Left: Authentic

Right: Counterfeit

  • Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712/1A dials compared, authentic on the left and counterfeit on the right

At first glance, the two dials may appear similar. However, differences can be found in the typography, hour markers, luminous plots, spacing, and overall finishing.

In some cases, the most important evidence is found on the reverse side of the dial rather than on the visible surface. For this reason, authentication cannot rely solely on comparing front-facing photographs.

Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712/1A Bracelet

Left: Authentic

Right: Counterfeit

  • Patek Philippe Nautilus bracelet clasp codes compared, authentic on the left and counterfeit on the right

A certificate may state that a watch was sold in 2022, while the bracelet attached to it may carry a code, font, or construction style inconsistent with that period.

We have encountered cases in which a watch was accompanied by apparently correct documentation, but its bracelet corresponded to a much earlier production period or had been replaced with a CNC-manufactured counterfeit component.

The bracelet code, engraving method, typography, finishing, and production-period consistency must all be evaluated together.

Richard Mille RM 030 Rose Gold

  • Richard Mille RM 030 movement examined under magnification
  • Richard Mille RM 030 movement components inspected for servicing damage

A watch may appear normal externally while containing movement damage caused by improper servicing.

Scratches or damage to internal movement components are often impossible to restore completely. Even when a buyer is willing to accept the condition, such damage can reduce the watch’s value by a significant amount.

Authentication therefore includes more than confirming whether a watch is genuine. It also requires evaluating:

  • Movement condition
  • Evidence of incorrect servicing
  • Irreversible damage
  • Repairability
  • Expected impact on market value

Richard Mille Certificates

Richard Mille certificates must be examined for more than their printed information.

Important details may include:

  • Paper texture and thickness
  • Printing quality
  • Handwritten versus printed information
  • Reference and serial-number format
  • Certificate design used during the relevant production period
  • Consistency between the certificate type and the watch’s estimated year

For example, certain early limited editions were produced during a relatively narrow period. If a certificate shows a much later date or uses a document format that does not correspond to that era, further investigation is required.

A certificate should never be accepted as authentic simply because the reference and serial numbers appear correct.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A

Left: Authentic

Right: Counterfeit

  • Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A clasps compared side by side, authentic and counterfeit

On counterfeit examples, the Calatrava cross may appear too rounded or poorly defined, and the internal details may lack the sharpness found on authentic components.

The engravings inside the clasp may also differ in font, depth, alignment, and production method. Determining whether a mark was created by laser engraving, stamping, or another process can be an important part of the inspection.

Patek Philippe Boxes and Accessories

Top: Authentic

Bottom: Counterfeit

  • Patek Philippe presentation and outer boxes compared, authentic above and counterfeit below

Authentic Patek Philippe presentation boxes can be highly valuable on their own. As a result, counterfeit boxes and accessories are also widely circulated.

Our inspection therefore extends beyond the watch and certificate to include:

  • Presentation box
  • Straps
  • Buckles
  • Manuals
  • Tags
  • Setting pins
  • Other accompanying accessories

A complete set is only valuable when each component is consistent and authentic.

What We Inspect

Based on extensive acquisition and sales experience, ONE OF ONE carefully examines both the watch and all accompanying documentation and accessories.

Our inspection may include:

  • Whether any component has been replaced or is counterfeit
  • Which condition issues affect the watch’s value
  • The expected amount of depreciation
  • Whether damaged parts can be repaired
  • Whether the box, strap, buckle, or accessories are authentic
  • Whether the certificate is genuine and period-correct
  • Whether the watch and its paperwork are consistent with one another

We do not rely on a single serial number, hallmark, or certificate.

Every item is evaluated as a complete system.
