Chaumet

The History of Chaumet – Jeweler to Napoleon and Master of the Tiara

Founded in 1780 in Paris, Chaumet is one of the oldest high jewelry houses in the world. Its founder, Marie-Étienne Nitot, trained under the court jeweler to Queen Marie-Antoinette before opening his own workshop, and in 1802 he was appointed jeweler to Napoleon. Together with his son, Nitot created the jewels for Napoleon's coronation in 1804, as well as the wedding jewels for both Empress Joséphine and Empress Marie-Louise. For more than 240 years, Chaumet has carried this imperial heritage into jewelry that is refined, romantic and unmistakably Parisian.

Unlike many jewelry houses that built their names on a single icon, Chaumet earned its reputation as the master of the tiara. Since 1780, the house has created more than 2,000 tiaras for royal and aristocratic families across Europe, and its archives hold thousands of tiara designs and models. In 1812, Chaumet became the first jeweler to open on Place Vendôme, and since 1907 it has been based at 12 Place Vendôme, where its salons, workshops and archives remain today. The house takes its name from Joseph Chaumet, who led the Maison from 1885 and shaped it into the Chaumet we know today.

Today, Chaumet presents an exquisite range of fine jewelry, including engagement rings, wedding bands, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and high jewelry creations. Part of the LVMH group since 1999, the house remains especially admired for its bridal jewelry, where tiara-inspired designs give each ring a sense of history and ceremony.

Rather than following passing trends, Chaumet has stayed faithful to the themes that have defined it for centuries — nature, love and the bonds between people. Signature collections such as Joséphine, Bee de Chaumet, Liens, and Torsade de Chaumet have been cherished for years, cementing Chaumet's place as one of the most prestigious and enduring names in the fine jewelry industry.

ONE OF ONE's Insight

Chaumet offers the same Place Vendôme heritage as the most famous Parisian houses, but its resale market is smaller than Cartier's or Van Cleef & Arpels'. As a result, pre-owned Chaumet pieces generally trade further below retail, which makes them one of the best-value ways to own historic French high jewelry.

Bee de Chaumet and Liens are the most liquid lines. Recognizable motifs at accessible price points find new owners faster than one-of-a-kind pieces. Pieces sold under the former name Bee My Love belong to the same collection and are valued the same way.

Joséphine bridal rings are valued first on the center diamond, then on the platinum tiara-inspired setting. However, wedding rings are a category many buyers hesitate to purchase pre-owned, so resale demand is low and prices tend to be lower. By contrast, lines that do not signify marriage and can be worn as everyday fashion jewelry, such as Bee de Chaumet, hold their pre-owned value relatively well against boutique prices.

Keeping the original box, Chaumet certificate, and any diamond grading report is essential, both for buyers to know what they're getting and for sellers to get full value for their piece.

Joséphine Bridal

Inspired by the tiaras Chaumet created for Empress Joséphine, the Joséphine bridal line turns the aigrette — the feather-like plume once worn on an imperial tiara — into engagement rings that crown the center diamond.

Bee de Chaumet (formerly Bee My Love)

The bee was Napoleon's emblem of imperial power, and Chaumet has crafted it since the days of its founder, the emperor's jeweler. Bee de Chaumet, formerly Bee My Love, turns the motif into honeycomb hexagons that link endlessly — a symbol of togetherness, set with Chaumet's exclusive 88-facet hexagonal-cut diamonds.

Chaumet Care Guide

How to Care for Your Chaumet Jewelry

Chaumet jewelry combines platinum, 18k gold, diamonds, pearls and colored stones, so each piece calls for a little care to keep its brilliance and its value over the years.

Daily Care Tips

Put your jewelry on last, after perfume, hair spray and lotion have fully dried, and take it off before swimming, exercising, showering or cleaning. Remove rings before activities that put pressure on your hands. Pearls in particular are sensitive to perfume, sweat and chemicals, so wipe them gently with a soft cloth after each wear.

Cleaning Your Chaumet Jewelry

For gold, platinum and diamond pieces, soak briefly in lukewarm water with a mild neutral detergent, brush gently behind the stones with a soft toothbrush, rinse with clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not soak pearls, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners on pieces with pearls, mother-of-pearl, malachite or other porous or treated stones. Pavé and honeycomb settings, such as those of Bee de Chaumet and Torsade de Chaumet, collect dust easily, so clean them regularly.

Storage Recommendations

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined case with dividers so that diamonds do not scratch gold, platinum or softer stones. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity, and keep pearl jewelry away from heat and very dry air.

Professional Inspection & Polishing

Tiara-inspired settings, pavé work and fine claws should be checked by a professional about once a year for loose stones or worn prongs. Polishing removes a very small amount of metal and can soften crisp edges and faceted surfaces, so polish only when needed. Pearl jewelry should also be checked periodically for the condition of its stringing or mounting.

Maintaining Long-Term Value

Keep the original box, Chaumet certificate, any diamond grading report, receipts and service records together. Avoid unnecessary resizing or alterations and, where possible, keep the original stones, since original condition is what buyers value most when a piece is resold.
