Graff

The History of Graff – The King of Diamonds and Master of the World's Rarest Stones

Founded in 1960 in London, Graff is one of the world's most celebrated high jewelry houses. Established by Laurence Graff, who began as a young apprentice in Hatton Garden, the house built its reputation on exceptional diamonds, uncompromising craftsmanship, and a lifelong passion for rare stones. In 1973, Graff became the first jeweler ever to receive the Queen's Award for Industry and Export, an honor the house would go on to receive five times. For more than 65 years, Graff has created jewelry that lets the beauty of each stone speak for itself.

Unlike many luxury jewelry houses that rely on outside suppliers, Graff earned its reputation by controlling every step from rough diamond to finished jewel. Through its own cutting and polishing facility in Johannesburg, the house has transformed some of history's most legendary stones. In 2008, Graff acquired the Wittelsbach-Graff, a historic deep-blue diamond, and in 2010 the Graff Pink, a 23.88-carat Fancy Vivid pink diamond. In 2017, it acquired the Lesedi La Rona, one of the largest rough diamonds ever discovered, and unveiled it in 2019 as a 302.37-carat masterpiece — cementing Graff's status as the ultimate authority on exceptional diamonds.

Today, Graff presents an exquisite range of fine jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, watches, and exceptional high jewelry creations. Among these, Graff's iconic diamond jewelry has become a global symbol of brilliance and rarity, admired by collectors, royalty, and celebrities alike.

Rather than following passing trends, Graff has remained faithful to a design philosophy centered on the diamond itself. Signature collections such as Butterfly, Laurence Graff Signature, and Tilda's Bow have been cherished for years, cementing Graff's place as one of the most prestigious and enduring names in the fine jewelry industry.

ONE OF ONE's Insight

Graff is priced around its diamonds, so pre-owned pieces typically trade at a deeper discount to retail than brands like Van Cleef & Arpels or Cartier — making the pre-owned market one of the best-value ways to own Graff.

Butterfly and Laurence Graff Signature are the most liquid lines: recognizable designs at accessible price points find new owners faster than one-of-a-kind pieces.

Bridal solitaires are valued first on the diamond itself. Many Korean buyers prefer a ring with no previous owner, so resale demand is comparatively softer — but that also means strong value for buyers.

Graff diamonds come with a GIA grading report and are laser-inscribed on the girdle — keeping the original report, Graff certificate and box is essential, both for buyers to know what they're getting and for sellers to get full value for their piece.

Authentication

Graff Authentication by ONE OF ONE

ONE OF ONE is a luxury watch and fine jewelry specialist based in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul. Every month, we buy and sell more than 300 luxury watches and jewelry pieces, giving us extensive hands-on experience with authentic Graff creations.

Over the years, we have examined a wide range of Graff pieces, including bridal solitaires, Butterfly, Laurence Graff Signature, Tilda's Bow, Icon, Spiral, and Wild Flower. This experience has allowed us to build an extensive authentication archive and develop a systematic inspection process.

Because the value of every Graff piece is defined by its diamonds, our authentication goes far beyond a simple visual inspection. We combine advanced gemological equipment, historical manufacturing data, and microscopic examination of every setting, engraving, and detail.

Method 01

Method 01: Metal Engraving & Brand Stamp

On genuine Graff pieces, the brand engraving on the inside of the piece is crisp, clean and precisely defined. Counterfeits typically fall short on sharpness and detail — placed side by side with a genuine reference, the difference is unmistakable.

  • Letterforms — on a genuine piece, each letter of the engraving has clean edges, even depth and consistent spacing; on counterfeits, letters often look blurred, shallow in places, or slightly misaligned
  • Finish around the engraving — genuine engravings sit cleanly within a well-polished surface, while counterfeits often show rough edges or smudged strokes under magnification
  • Graff brand engraving, macro
  • Graff brand engraving, macro, close focus
  • Counterfeit Graff hallmark stamp
  • Genuine Graff hallmark stamp
The left one is the fake, the right one is the genuine piece.

Method 02

Method 02: Prong Spacing, Size & Uniformity

At high jewelry houses like Graff, the prongs that hold each diamond are part of the design itself. Their size, shape and spacing follow a consistent rhythm, so irregular prongs are one of the clearest signs of a counterfeit.

  • Prong head size — on genuine Graff pieces, prongs are consistently sized and evenly shaped across stones of the same size; on counterfeits, prong heads vary noticeably even on identical stones — some large and rounded, others small and flattened
  • Pavé rhythm — Graff's pavé settings are typically designed in CAD and set under a microscope, giving genuine pieces an even, regular rhythm; counterfeits lack this consistency, with irregular spacing between stones — on a flower petal, for example, prongs may look crowded in one area while the stones sit visibly far apart in another
  • Counterfeit Graff pavé setting, irregular prongs
  • Genuine Graff pavé setting, uniform prongs
The counterfeit is on the left and the authentic piece is on the right. On the counterfeit, the prongs holding the diamonds vary in size, with a mix of noticeably smaller and larger ones. In contrast, the prongs on the authentic piece are generally uniform in size.

Method 03

Method 03: Natural Diamond Screening

Because the value of every Graff piece lies in its diamonds, ONE OF ONE screens every diamond-set piece with a professional diamond-testing device, whether or not it is accompanied by its original certificate.

This process helps us identify whether the stones are natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds, cubic zirconia, or moissanite. It also allows us to check for signs that an original diamond may have been removed and replaced at a later date — from the center stone of a bridal solitaire to the smallest pavé diamonds in a Butterfly or Wild Flower piece.

Our equipment is capable of distinguishing among:

  • Natural diamonds
  • Laboratory-grown diamonds
  • Cubic zirconia
  • Moissanite

By combining advanced testing equipment with hands-on authentication experience, we are able to inspect not only the jewelry itself, but also every stone set within it.

  • DiaTrue CS2 Pro diamond screening device

Method 04

Method 04: Weight & Material Inspection

Graff creations are crafted in platinum and 18k gold and set with a precise number of diamonds, so every model has a consistent weight, stone layout, and construction. ONE OF ONE compares each piece with authentic examples of the same model to evaluate its weight, materials, dimensions, proportions, stone count, and overall construction.

However, some sophisticated counterfeits are also made from real gold and can closely replicate the weight of an authentic piece. For this reason, weight is only one part of our authentication process and is never used as the sole indicator of authenticity.

Graff Care Guide

How to Care for Your Graff Jewelry

Graff jewelry is designed to last for generations, but proper care is essential to preserve its brilliance and value. Whether you own a Graff solitaire engagement ring, a Butterfly pendant, a Laurence Graff Signature bangle, or a Wild Flower piece, following a few simple maintenance practices can help keep your jewelry in excellent condition for years to come.

Daily Care Tips

To minimize scratches and signs of wear, avoid wearing Graff jewelry during activities that involve heavy impact, sports, or lifting weights. A hard knock can loosen the prongs that hold a diamond in place, so take particular care with solitaires and pavé-set pieces. Remove your jewelry before swimming, using cleaning chemicals, or applying perfumes and lotions. These substances can dull the sparkle of diamonds and affect the finish of precious metals over time.

Cleaning Your Graff Jewelry

Diamonds naturally attract oils from skin and cosmetics, which can quickly dull their brilliance. Clean your Graff jewelry regularly using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft microfiber cloth. Gently remove any dirt or residue without using abrasive brushes or polishing compounds. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless they are specifically recommended for your particular piece, as vibrations can loosen small pavé-set diamonds.

Storage Recommendations

Store each Graff piece separately in its original box or a soft jewelry pouch. Diamonds are hard enough to scratch other diamonds and precious metals, so keeping bracelets, rings, and necklaces apart will help preserve their polished finish and prevent unnecessary wear.

Professional Inspection & Polishing

Over time, all gold and platinum jewelry naturally develops surface scratches. Professional polishing can restore the original shine, but it also removes a very small amount of precious metal and may soften the crisp, faceted edges of designs such as Laurence Graff Signature. Many collectors therefore recommend polishing only when necessary. For diamond-set pieces, we also recommend having the prongs and settings checked periodically to make sure every stone remains secure.

Maintaining Long-Term Value

Original boxes, Graff certificates, GIA grading reports, receipts, and service records significantly enhance the resale value of Graff jewelry. Regular maintenance while preserving original components — especially the original diamonds — helps retain both authenticity and collector appeal.
