FRED
FRED's History – From Rue Royale to the Jeweler of Sun and Sea
Founded in 1936 in Paris, FRED began when Fred Samuel, a 28-year-old jeweler born in Buenos Aires in 1908, opened his own boutique at 6 Rue Royale. Raised between Argentina and France, he brought the sunlight and colors of South America and the French Riviera into Parisian fine jewelry, presenting himself as "the modern designer jeweler." His bold, joyful designs soon won over clients such as Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich, and in 1976 Princess Grace herself attended the opening of FRED's boutique in Monaco.
Unlike many Parisian houses rooted in court jewelry, FRED found its signature at sea. In 1966, inspired by the family's love of sailing, the house created the first Force 10 bracelet — a braided steel sailing cable closed with a gold buckle shaped like a boat's shackle. Named after force 10 on the Beaufort wind scale, a storm-force wind, it became one of the first unisex icons of fine jewelry, and in 2007 FRED made its cables interchangeable. In 1977, the house acquired the Soleil d'Or, a yellow diamond of more than 105 carats, and in 1990 a FRED ruby and diamond heart necklace, chosen at its Rodeo Drive boutique in Beverly Hills, appeared on screen in Pretty Woman.
Today, FRED presents an exquisite range of fine jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, and high jewelry creations. Part of the LVMH group since 1995, the house celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2026, the same year Force 10 turns 60, and has become one of the most loved French jewelry houses in Korea.
Rather than following passing trends, FRED has stayed faithful to the sun, the sea and the joy of wearing fine jewelry every day. Signature collections such as Force 10, Pretty Woman, Chance Infinie, and Pain de Sucre have been cherished for years, cementing FRED's place as one of the most prestigious and enduring names in the fine jewelry industry.

ONE OF ONE's Insight
FRED shares the Parisian heritage of the best-known houses, but its resale market is smaller than Cartier's or Van Cleef & Arpels'. As a result, pre-owned FRED pieces generally trade further below retail, which makes them one of the best-value ways to own French fine jewelry.
Force 10 is by far the most liquid line. Its buckle is instantly recognizable, and strong demand in Korea helps pre-owned bracelets and rings find new owners quickly.
On newer Force 10 bracelets, most of the value sits in the gold buckle — the cables can be replaced. Check the buckle for deep scratches or dents, and confirm that its serial number matches the certificate.
Older Force 10 bracelets are made with the cable and buckle as a single piece that cannot be separated. They are less popular than the newer models, whose cables detach, so they generally trade at lower prices.
For Pretty Woman and Chance Infinie pieces, check that every pavé diamond is in place. For Pain de Sucre, check the cabochon for chips or scratches, since its domed surface shows wear easily.
FRED pieces set with many diamonds lose value faster on the resale market, so the higher the retail price, the larger the gap between boutique and pre-owned prices. The same is true of older pieces compared with today's boutique prices. For this reason, high-priced and older FRED pieces are the ones we most recommend buying pre-owned, where the price is far better than the current boutique price.
Keeping the original box, FRED certificate, and any diamond grading report is essential, both for buyers to know what they're getting and for sellers to get full value for their piece.
Force 10

Pretty Woman
In 1990, the production team of Pretty Woman visited FRED's Rodeo Drive boutique and chose a ruby and diamond heart necklace for the film. The collection that took its name revisits that design as a "heart within a heart" — a lucky charm in pink or white gold, plain or set with diamonds.

Authentication
FRED Authentication by ONE OF ONE
ONE OF ONE is a luxury watch and fine jewelry specialist based in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul. Every month, we buy and sell more than 300 luxury watches and jewelry pieces, giving us extensive hands-on experience with authentic FRED creations.
FRED is one of the most popular French jewelry houses in Korea, and Force 10 in particular — with its simple design and strong demand — is the line most often counterfeited. Blank certificates have also been found in circulation, so documents such as a certificate cannot confirm authenticity on their own. FRED pieces also differ in how engravings and hallmarks are applied depending on the era, workshop, and model, which makes it difficult for non-specialists to authenticate a piece using only one or two criteria. Reliable results require a large archive of genuine references and hands-on comparison experience — the kind of archive ONE OF ONE has built case by case.
Method 01
Method 01: Engraving Clarity
On genuine FRED pieces, the FRED logo and engravings inside the piece or on the back of the buckle are crisp and clearly defined. Each letter has clean edges, with even depth and spacing.
Counterfeits, by contrast, often show faint or smudged engravings — strokes that look blurred, letters cut shallow in places, or uneven spacing. Under magnification, or placed side by side with a genuine piece of the same model, the difference is unmistakable.
Method 02
Method 02: Varied Hallmark Formats
Inside FRED pieces, the brand logo appears alongside marks such as the gold purity stamp (750) and hallmarks. However, these marks are not applied the same way on every piece — their position, arrangement, and the types of marks included vary with the year and country of production, the workshop, and the model.
This means a piece cannot be judged against a single "this is what genuine looks like" reference photo; doing so can easily lead to a genuine piece being mistaken for a counterfeit, or a counterfeit for a genuine one. ONE OF ONE draws on the many cases it has accumulated to confirm that each piece carries the correct set of markings for its model.
FRED Care Guide
How to Care for Your FRED Jewelry
FRED jewelry is designed to be worn every day, from the steel cables of Force 10 to the colored cabochons of Pain de Sucre, and a little regular care keeps each piece looking its best.
Daily Care Tips
Put your jewelry on after perfume, hair spray and lotion have dried. Take it off before swimming, exercising or cleaning, and avoid knocks to the gold buckle of a Force 10, where deep scratches and dents are hardest to remove. Cabochon stones such as rose quartz, chalcedony and lapis lazuli can be scratched or dulled by hard impacts and chemicals.
Cleaning Your FRED Jewelry
Wipe gold and diamond pieces gently with a soft, lint-free cloth, or rinse briefly in lukewarm water with a mild neutral detergent and dry thoroughly. For Force 10 bracelets, wipe the cable with a damp cloth and let it dry fully; colored cables can fade or stain with prolonged exposure to water, sunlight and cosmetics. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on pieces with colored cabochons, and check pavé pieces regularly for loose stones.
Storage Recommendations
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined case so that diamonds and metal do not scratch cabochons or other pieces. Lay Force 10 bracelets flat or hang them rather than folding the cable, and keep colored cables away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Professional Inspection & Polishing
Because Force 10 cables are interchangeable, a worn cable can be replaced without replacing the buckle. Have pavé settings and cabochon mountings checked by a professional about once a year, and polish the gold only when needed, since polishing removes a very small amount of metal.
Maintaining Long-Term Value
Keep the original box, FRED certificate, any diamond grading report, receipts and service records together. For Force 10, keep the original buckle and, where possible, the original cable and any interchangeable cabochons. Avoid unnecessary resizing or alterations, since original condition and complete papers help at resale.
