Damiani

The History of Damiani – Italian Fine Jewelry from the Goldsmith City of Valenza

Damiani is an Italian fine jewelry house that began in 1924 in Valenza, Piedmont, one of Italy's most celebrated goldsmith towns. Its founder, Enrico Grassi Damiani, was a master goldsmith who built his reputation creating bespoke jewelry for aristocratic and affluent clients. Under his son Damiano, the second generation, the house modernized its design, research and marketing and grew from a local workshop into an internationally recognized jewelry brand.

Damiani first became known around the world through the Diamonds International Awards. After winning its first award in 1976 with the "Shark" bracelet, the house has gone on to win 18 times, a record among jewelry houses. Isabella Rossellini became the face of the brand in the 1980s, and figures such as Sophia Loren, Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston have been associated with Damiani. In the early 2000s, the D.Side collection created in collaboration with Brad Pitt drew worldwide attention.

Damiani's design is defined by the precision of pieces finished by hand, one at a time, and by the continuous brilliance of diamonds set in pavé. Diamonds hidden on the inner side or edge of a band so that only the wearer can see them, and a "D" logo set at a slight angle as a design element, are among its signatures. The pieces are still crafted by artisans in Valenza, a point of pride for the house.

Damiani was listed on the Milan stock exchange in 2007 and delisted in 2019, after which the family regained ownership of nearly all of the company. It is now led by the third generation — Giorgio, Guido and Silvia Grassi Damiani — and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024. In 2025, the Italian financial daily Milano Finanza described Damiani as the only Italian international jeweler still owned by its founding family. The group also includes Salvini, Bliss, Calderoni, Rocca and Venini.

ONE OF ONE's Insight

In Korea, demand for Damiani is concentrated in the Belle Époque, Mimosa and Margherita lines; demand for other lines is very limited. Belle Époque is popular, but the Belle Époque Reel line has very little demand.

Damiani pieces do not carry a serial number, so even when a warranty card is included it is difficult to confirm that its details match the piece. Genuine warranty cards also circulate on their own, and are often slipped in with loose pieces or counterfeits. A genuine card should bear the stamp of the Damiani boutique that actually sold the piece, yet we frequently see cards stamped by Japanese second-hand luxury stores instead.

For this reason, we recommend avoiding private direct trades. It is safer to have a Damiani piece authenticated by a specialist with extensive experience, or to buy pre-owned pieces that such a specialist guarantees.

Damiani raises its boutique prices substantially every year, but pre-owned prices do not keep pace, so the gap between boutique and resale prices is wide. For sellers, the most recent pieces carry the largest loss, and pieces five years or older lose comparatively less. For buyers, Damiani is also one of the brands where buying pre-owned from a trusted source offers the lowest price.

Belle Époque

Belle Époque is one of Damiani's longest-running signature lines, inspired by the style of 1920s film stars. Centered on rings and pendants, with pendant designs for both men and women, it is defined by a balance between form and stones, whether diamonds or colored gemstones. It has also been popular as a wedding and bridal line.

D.Side

Introduced in the early 2000s, D.Side is regarded as one of Damiani's best-known and most imitated designs. Its defining feature is a row of diamonds set along the side of the band, visible only to the wearer, and the collaboration with Brad Pitt brought it worldwide attention. Sets have also been created in yellow gold, malachite and diamonds, including a sautoir necklace, pendants and a bracelet. The collection also includes rose gold pieces in which a mother-of-pearl disc is framed by a ring of small diamonds, in rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Margherita

Margherita draws on a ring that founder Enrico Grassi Damiani dedicated to Queen Margherita, the first Queen of Italy, in the early twentieth century. It is recognizable by its harmonious daisy-shaped volumes and comes in versions such as white gold with diamonds, rose gold with brown diamonds and amethyst, and yellow gold with diamonds and citrine.

Authentication

Damiani Authentication by ONE OF ONE

ONE OF ONE is a luxury watch and fine jewelry specialist based in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul. Every month, we buy and sell more than 300 luxury watches and jewelry pieces, giving us extensive hands-on experience with authentic Damiani creations.

Damiani pieces do not carry a serial number, so authentication cannot rely on matching numbers. Instead, we combine close examination of every setting, engraving and joint with comparison against authentic examples, drawing on the experience we have built handling Damiani pieces such as Belle Époque, D.Side, Margherita, and Mimosa.

Method 01

Method 01: Never Rely on the Warranty Card Alone

Because Damiani pieces carry no serial number, it is difficult to confirm that the details on a warranty card actually match the piece in front of you. Genuine warranty cards also circulate on their own, and they are often slipped in with loose pieces or counterfeits.

Do not trust a piece simply because an official warranty card comes with the piece and its box. Since there is no way to know where it was sold, we treat it as a piece without papers.

Method 02

Method 02: Comparing Stone Settings and Joints with Genuine Examples

We closely compare the details unique to each brand — the stone settings, the stone seats, the jump rings and other joint areas — with authentic examples of the same piece.

Case Study: A Counterfeit Damiani Belle Époque Cross

We recently received a Damiani Belle Époque cross for a purchase inquiry and inspected it ourselves. In short, it was counterfeit — and it shows why the common rule "if it has the engraving, it's genuine" does not hold.

The D ornament at the end of the chain: on a genuine piece, even a small part like this is cleanly finished. Here the lines of the D are thin and the surfaces uneven, with solder clumped at the ring joint. Counterfeits often give themselves away first in small parts like this.

The "DAMIANI made in italy" engraving on the keyhole tag: the depth is inconsistent and the letter spacing uneven. The lowercase "made in italy" looks lightly pressed rather than struck, and the cut edges of the keyhole are left rough.

750 and workshop marks do not guarantee authenticity: the back of the tag carries 750 and a star-number-AL mark. The format looks convincing, but the corners of the stamp boxes are rough and the letters shallow and crowded. Counterfeiters can copy the wording of a hallmark far more easily than the quality of the strike.

The back of the cross was decisive: the casting is rough with tooling marks left in place, there are brown and orange stains at one corner, the stone settings are uneven with crude finishing of the holes behind them, and no engraving can be found on the back of the cross itself. The back is far more honest than the front — genuine pieces are often finished even on the surfaces that are never seen.

The pavé setting on the front: stone size and height are uneven and the beads holding the stones are inconsistent, with yellowish gaps between the metal. The sliding stone line at the center also lacks the precision expected of a genuine piece.

Why we judged this piece counterfeit: the poor finish of the D ornament, the inconsistent depth and spacing of the keyhole tag engraving, the quality of the hallmark boxes, the rough casting and staining on the back of the cross, and the irregular stone settings.

Damiani Care Guide

How to Care for Your Damiani Jewelry

Damiani jewelry features a great deal of pavé setting and small stones, so regular care is the key to preserving its condition and value over the years.

Daily Care Tips

Avoid wearing your jewelry while showering, swimming, exercising or cleaning. Apply perfume, hair spray and lotion first, and put your jewelry on only after they have fully dried. Take rings off before lifting heavy objects or any activity that puts force on your hands. For designs with stones along the side, such as D.Side, take particular care to avoid knocks to the edges.

Cleaning Your Damiani Jewelry

Soak the piece briefly in lukewarm water with a mild neutral detergent, gently brush behind the stones and into the crevices with a soft toothbrush, rinse with clean water, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on pieces with colored stones or treated stones.

Storage Recommendations

Store each piece separately in an individual pouch or a case with dividers so pieces do not scratch one another. Diamonds can scratch other jewelry, so keep them especially well separated. Choose a place with low humidity that is out of direct sunlight.

Professional Inspection & Polishing

For pavé and prong settings, we recommend having a professional check for loose prongs, shifting stones, and the condition of the chain and clasp about once a year. Polishing removes a very small amount of gold from the surface, so keep it to a minimum and do it only when needed.

Maintaining Long-Term Value

Keep the box, warranty card (invoice) and any appraisal documents together. Where possible, keep the piece in its original condition, without unnecessary resizing or alterations, which helps when reselling.
